Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some players get baffled. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical notion in nearly all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems complicated at the start, after a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental subtleties of play with ease.
