Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players often get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same notion in just about all poker games.
A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem complex at first, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of the game easily enough.
