Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he enjoyed betting on various card games at a young age. He found himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were difficult as he played countless hours and don’t win most times. He earned some extra cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus even more on poker.
The actual improvement in his game happened when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best gamblers would often challenge each other. He had access into some of the best players in chess. With their help, Howard would tweak his strategic thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.
Howard also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the best female players the poker world today. Howard headed to Sin City in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in money games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
