Howard Lederer lived in a family of 5 where he enjoyed taking part in numerous card games at a young age. He earned some extra cash by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could improve his game by analyzing his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and focus even more on poker.
The real advancement in his game happened when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would often compete against one another. He had access into some of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his cunning thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL texas hold’em.
He also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie to head out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the greatest women players the poker world has ever seen. Howard Lederer moved to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
